Nonprofit Top Online College

Western Governors University (WGU) is a top online college that is a nonprofit institution. It has a very reasonable tuition of just $2,890 for a six-month term, coupled with an academic model that lets students accelerate the completion of their degree based on prior subject knowledge. WGU was founded in 1997 by 19 governors from Western states and based in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The university has since grown from about 500 students to nearly 24,000, and it offers over 50 degrees in subjects like teaching, business, information technology, and nursing, at both the bachelor's and master's level. The school's nationally accredited teaching programs have proven to be the most popular, attracting nearly 50% of the enrollment, followed by the business college. Enrollment has increased by about 30% a year on average at WGU since 2003. The online institution was designed by the governors to be an affordable alternative to state colleges and for-profit online universities, geared toward older students.
